Cowboys media voice suggests Jalen Tolbert could be inactive on Sunday

Sunday will mark the start of a new season for the Dallas Cowboys, one where expectations are pretty high considering the team won the division a year ago but ended up disappointing in the playoffs.

Expectations are often associated with pressure and it feels like the intensity is on the rise for Dallas and the demand for them to achieve greatness this season. On the surface, their list contains many questions that we hope to get answered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and right at the top of the list is how the organization handled the wide receiver position.

The Cowboys traded Amari Cooper in the offseason, but they also lost Cedrick Wilson in free agency. Dallas “replaced” those players by signing James Washington (who is currently out while on injured reserve) in free agency and drafting Jalen Tolbert in the third round. They ended up adding KaVontae Turpin after the start of training camp, and while we’re excited about him, time will really tell whether or not he’s involved in the team’s offensive game plan.

There are talks that Jalen Tolbert could be inactive on Sunday night against the Buccaneers

Going into Sunday’s game against Tampa, the Cowboys have CeeDee Lamb who is WR1, but after that there isn’t much in terms of proven experience at the NFL level. Michael Gallup probably won’t play, James Washington certainly won’t, so the presumptive reality is that Jalen Tolbert would inherit an opportunity to contribute.

But could there be a curve in week 1? Voice of longtime mother Bryan Broaddus (who can now be heard at 105.3 The Fan) said recently on the Love of the Star podcast that Jalen Tolbert could be inactive Sunday night. He added some clarification on Twitter after people started asking him about it.

While it wouldn’t be the end of the world if Tolbert was a healthy scratch against the Buccaneers (he wasn’t listed on the injury report, so that would actually be it), it would certainly be disheartening given the events of the last months.

The Cowboys raved about Tolbert and it wasn’t a big leap for people to assume the team was planning on him contributing right away. It was also long speculated that Gallup would run out of time early in the season and the Cowboys opted to roll with the group of receivers they have, which would seem to indicate they were okay with the status quo.

As Bryan Broaddus notes, it could come down to the Cowboys dressing Jalen Tolbert or fellow rookie Dennis Houston. While Tolbert was a Cowboys third-round selection, teammate Dennis Houston took a much less conventional route and made the roster as an undrafted free agent this year after quickly building trust with quarterback Dak. Prescott throughout camp. On the other side of that, Tolbert didn’t have a pre-season that set the world on fire.

Perhaps it comes down to the trust Houston has with Prescott. Maybe the Cowboys think Houston is the right game right now. But it would certainly be discouraging to see Tolbert inactive.

Ultimately, we’ll have to see what happens. Broaddus is just suggesting it could happen, and we’re passing it on as a warning. But in the end, the Cowboys could very well dress Tolbert and this will all be just a passing rumor.
