Popular PC Mod Sites Ban Anti-Pride Flag Modders In Marvel’s Spider-Man

insomniacs wonderit is Spider Man recently made the leap from PlayStation exclusive to Windows PC, as did Sony God of the war made earlier this year. Naturally, the sprawling open-world superhero game has caught the attention of the modding community, who now have the freedom to turn Spider-Man into Kingpin and other characters.

However, some modders have taken this newfound freedom for granted, targeting the various Pride flags scattered around Marvel’s Spiderman‘s New York and replace them with American flags. Fortunately, popular mod sites Nexus Mods and ModDB have taken a stand against this behavior.

On Thursday, Nexus Mods posted a blog on its site in which it addressed “silly drama.” The post explains how a user uploaded an anti-LGBTQ mod using a sock puppet account that removed all Pride flags from the game. Nexus Mods called out the user for intentional trolling, which led to the site managers to ban both the Sock Puppet account and the main user account.

“As to the replacement of Pride flags in this game, or any game, our policy is: we are for inclusivity, we are for diversity,” wrote user Dark0ne, owner site and author of the Nexus Mods blog. “If we believe someone is uploading a mod to our site with the intention of being deliberately against inclusivity and/or diversity, we will take action against it. The same goes for people who try to deliberately trolling other users with mods to cause a surge.

The post went on to promise that the team had better modify the site themselves in the future. He also clarified that when removing mods like this, all Nexus Mods can do is remove it from his site, not remove it from the internet entirely. You might be able to find hate mods like this on some mod sites, but Nexus Mods won’t be one of them. “We do not want to and will not discuss this with you,” Dark0ne wrote. “[…] If this policy bothers you, if we have violated a moral code of conduct as a business that you cannot accept, then please delete your account.

ModDB, another popular mod site, followed in the footsteps of Nexus Mods a few hours later when a fan tweeted evidence of a mod that specifically targeted “dumb pride flags” and was tagged both “Trump” and “Trump 2024”. The The ModDB Twitter account tweeted that the site had banned users who created the mod and removed the content, saying “ModDB is an inclusive environment for all and we do not allow targeting of marginalized groups.” ModDB assured fans that while its moderation tools are automated, the site will continue to remove such content if alerted.

While site-specific bans like these will never completely stop hate mods, the actions of Nexus Mods and ModDB send a key message of inclusivity to fans both in and out of the gaming ecosystem on pc.
