Video of journalist attacking Israeli security sparks anger on social platforms

LONDON: A clip emerged on Friday showing Israeli security agents brutally assaulting a Palestinian journalist, sparking widespread anger on social media platforms.

The clip shows half a dozen Israeli soldiers ganging up on the journalist, who was carrying his camera, begin beating him with sticks, then kick him as he lies on the ground. Video later shows medical workers carrying him away on a stretcher.

The clip, which has already amassed more than 100,000 views on Twitter, sparked outrage among users, with many calling on the international community to defend freedom of expression in Palestine.

Abier Khatib shared the video, saying, “I can’t wait to hear the Zionists turn the page. #Israeli occupying forces brutally assault a journalist. #AlAqsaUnderAttack.

Khatib later identified the journalist as Rami Khatib on his Twitter page, along with a picture of him in a hospital room with his arm bandaged and in a sling.

Meanwhile, another user tweeted: “The actions of a fearful, cowardly and losing occupying force who knows their oppression cannot last forever. #FreePalestine #AlAqsaUnderAttack”

Many users also called on foreign governments and media to take action against Israel.

The attack comes amid rising tensions in Jerusalem where Palestinians and Israeli police have been clashing for several days.

Israeli police raided the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Friday, leaving at least 152 Palestinians injured in the ensuing violence and hundreds arrested.

Israeli security forces are on high alert after a series of deadly attacks on Arab streets across the country over the past two weeks.
